Read Saju in Seven Steps

Start with the four birth pillars, identify the Day Master, compare element balance and Ten Gods, then add decade and annual cycles to explore timing themes.

  1. Confirm your birth details

Check whether the date is solar or Korean lunar, including any leap month. Use a birth record for the time; if unknown, omit the hour pillar.

  2. Build the four pillars

The year changes at Beginning of Spring, the month at a solar term, the day by its date and the hour by a two-hour branch. This service uses historical Korean clock rules and mean solar time at 127.5° E, not birth-location corrections.

  3. Find your Day Master

The birth day’s heavenly stem represents the self. Its symbolism, such as a tall tree for Gap Wood or the sun for Byeong Fire, is the starting point.

  4. Read the element balance

Count the visible Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water characters, then consider hidden stems to explore stronger and weaker elements.

  5. Read relationships through the Ten Gods

Compare other characters with the Day Master to identify peer, output, wealth, authority and resource relationships.

  6. Identify strength and the useful element

A strong Day Master generally benefits from draining energy; a weaker one from support. Seasonal temperature is considered as well.

  7. Add decade and annual cycles

Compare ten-year and annual cycles with the useful element and natal combinations or clashes to read symbolic timing themes.
